The following external EU and global solar energy initiatives offer valuable data, research, and tools that support the LEARN+ Project. These platforms provide technical insights, geographical data, and real-world applications that can enhance the project's learning resources and drive better decision-making for solar energy projects across Europe.

Renewables.ninja is a powerful platform that allows users to simulate the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy systems in any location across the globe. By utilizing historical weather data, Renewables.ninja provides hourly simulation results for solar panel outputs, offering detailed insights into how solar energy can perform under different conditions.

What can be learned:

  • Performance Estimation: LEARN+ users can leverage this platform to understand how solar panels will perform in specific geographical locations across Europe, using real-world weather and irradiance data.
  • Optimization: The platform allows users to optimize system designs based on expected energy generation, helping stakeholders choose the best locations and configurations for solar installations.
  • Long-term Projections: Renewables.ninja’s data can be used for long-term solar energy planning, helping governments, businesses, and individuals make more accurate projections for solar investments.

The PVGIS platform, developed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, provides solar energy estimation data across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. It offers tools for calculating the solar electricity output of photovoltaic (PV) systems based on geographical and meteorological data. The latest version, PVGIS 5.3, enhances the accuracy and user interface for determining optimal locations for solar energy projects.

What can be learned:

  • Geospatial Analysis: PVGIS provides detailed geographical data, allowing users to calculate the potential solar energy output for different regions based on solar irradiance and climatic factors.
  • System Design Support: LEARN+ participants can use PVGIS to design PV systems based on localized solar data, ensuring that installations are efficient and tailored to specific regional needs.
  • Comparative Energy Outputs: Users can compare different regions’ solar energy potentials, which is crucial for cross-country projects or identifying high-potential zones in Europe for solar energy investment.
